Splash! My family and I jump in the water to snorkel at La Jolla Cove (la hoya) in Southern California, near San Diego. La Jolla Cove is famous for seals, sea lions and Garibaldi fish. At La Jolla Cove you can see Garibaldi, sea bass, surf perch and lots of seals and sea lions.
My dad and I were swimming around and a seal jumped in the water and we watched it swim away from us. In this picture you can see a beautiful bright orange Garibaldi fish swimming along the reef with the long eel grass waving in the tide. The Garibaldi is the state fish of California and it is protected in La Jolla Cove.

This is definitely one of the highlights of our trip down south. It was odd how much cooler the water felt at La Jolla that day! I wonder if some of your classmates have snorkelled? Maybe around here with the salmon in the rivers or somewhere warm?

Hi Evan, sounds like a fun trip. The coolest fish I’ve ever seen? I was about 12, ice fishing at Lake Wabamun, west of Edmonton, Alberta in the middle of the winter, so it really was a “cool fish”. We would drill a hole in the ice, it could be a metre thick, and lie on our stomachs with a cover over our heads to keep the light out. On a sunny day quite a bit of sun would filter through the snow and ice and it was easy to see what was going on in the water below, especially if the water was shallow. As I lay there bobbing a line up and down with a small lure, a whitefish swam by and bumped into the hook. The fish stopped, paused, looked at the lure and bit. I jumped up, pulled the line and there it was, on the snow.
PS Whitefish used to be a very popular fish for eating but you don’t hear much about it any more.

It sounds like quite an adventure ice fishing on lake Wabamun. I have never gone ice fishing but I think it would be very fun. I also have never seen a Whitefish but I would love to catch one and maybe try one to eat.
